Jose Mourinho's Benfica remains undefeated since the start of the season, but that was still not enough to prevent Porto from claiming the Portuguese championship.
In the early hours of May 3, Porto officially secured the 2025/26 Primeira Liga title following a 1-0 victory over Alverca at their home ground, Estadio do Dragao. This result propelled the blue-and-whites to 85 points, establishing an insurmountable nine-point lead over Benfica and Sporting CP with only two matchdays remaining in the season.

Porto crowned champions after a four-year wait
The lone goal of the match was scored by Jan Bednarek in the 40th minute. The decisive strike sealed Porto's 31st league title in the club's history.
In the same round of fixtures, Benfica was held to a 2-2 draw by Famalicao, officially knocking them out of the title race.
This championship marks Porto's return to the top after a four-year domestic drought. The triumph arrives amid a sweeping club rebuild under the leadership of President Andre Villas-Boas.
Just two years into his new executive role, the former Porto manager has guided his hometown club back to the summit. A fascinating subplot lies in the deep-rooted history between the two figures. Villas-Boas previously served as an assistant to Jose Mourinho at Porto before branching out to forge his own managerial career.
This time, from the boardroom, he has eclipsed his former mentor, as Mourinho's Benfica failed to go the distance despite maintaining an undefeated record through 32 rounds.
On the touchline, manager Francesco Farioli has also left an indelible mark. The Italian tactician secured the championship in his debut season managing Porto, helping to complete the resurgence of one of Portugal's most storied clubs.
