The Belgian national team has officially unveiled its squad for the 2026 World Cup. Despite boasting several top European stars, head coach Rudi Garcia's side enters this tournament as "dark horses" rather than the outright title contenders they were during their golden generation era.

Belgium announces squad for the 2026 World Cup
The most prominent names in Belgian football remain ever-present. Kevin De Bruyne continues to command the midfield, while Thibaut Courtois returns to bolster the defense following a lengthy injury layoff.
Up front, hopes remain pinned on Romelu Lukaku, despite a turbulent season at Napoli and lingering injury concerns.
Alongside these veterans, Belgium is bringing a contingent brimming with pace and youth to the World Cup. Jeremy Doku, Leandro Trossard, Charles De Ketelaere, and Alexis Saelemaekers have all made the cut and are expected to be the difference-makers for the Red Devils.
However, the biggest talking point among fans lies in the omissions. Coach Garcia has opted to axe a slew of notable players, including Romeo Lavia, Lois Openda, Arthur Vermeeren, and Malick Fofana.
The exclusion of Openda, in particular, has generated considerable debate. The striker was widely regarded as the natural heir to Lukaku, thanks to his impressive pace and pressing ability.
Meanwhile, Vermeeren and Lavia have also emerged as highly touted young talents in recent years.
Following a highly successful 2018 World Cup campaign where they secured a third-place finish, Belgium has struggled to replicate the form of a major powerhouse on the international stage.

Consequently, the 2026 World Cup is viewed as the final opportunity for De Bruyne and the last remaining figures of the "golden generation" to leave their mark before completely passing the torch to the next wave of players.
