The Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence: An Object Under Scrutiny

Utilizing the SETI (Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence) Institute’s Allen Telescope Array, astronomers have scanned for artificial radio signals emanating from the famed interstellar object 3I/ATLAS—a celestial body that deeply divided the scientific community over the past year.

3I/ATLAS is the third interstellar object discovered transiting our solar system. Due to its numerous anomalous characteristics, some scientists have hypothesized that it could be an alien reconnaissance craft, though the vast majority believe it to be merely an unusual comet.


According to the researchers, these interstellar visitors serve as compelling targets in the ongoing hunt for technosignatures.


Writing in the scientific publication The Astronomical Journal, the international research team stated they observed 3I/ATLAS for more than seven hours using the Allen Telescope Array, covering a frequency band ranging from 1 to 9 GHz.


This effort initially identified nearly 74 million narrow-band signals. After filtering out human-made interference and isolating signals that aligned with the object's specific trajectory, approximately 200 signals were ultimately retained for further investigation.


However, subsequent, more rigorous verification steps revealed that all of these signals originated from Earth-based technology or satellites orbiting the planet.


Consequently, the new findings have once again debunked the hypothesis that 3I/ATLAS is an extraterrestrial spacecraft.


Dr. Valeria Garcia Lopez, an astronomer at Furman University (US), stated that the team was by no means disappointed by the outcome. On the contrary, she noted, it demonstrates that detecting artificial radio signals using current technology is entirely feasible.


"3I/ATLAS may be a natural object, but we can continue to apply this methodology to scrutinize other compelling targets," Garcia Lopez added.
