iPhone survives 30,000-meter fall from stratosphere with no parachute

An iPhone 17 Pro dropped from 30,607 meters over northern Sweden without a parachute survived the fall in working condition, setting a Guinness World Record for the case maker that staged the test.

Guinness World Records certified the attempt on Aug. 26 under the title "highest drop of a mobile phone in a phone case (natural landforms)."


The drop took place June 24 above the Esrange Space Center near Kiruna, in Swedish Lapland, and was staged by Taiwan-based case maker RhinoShield with British aerospace firm Sent Into Space, Interesting Engineering reported.


A Guinness adjudicator, Juliet Dawson, reviewed video evidence, witness accounts and the recovered device before confirming the record. The phone could still be powered on and off, place calls and take photographs, and its exterior was undamaged.


Guinness put the release point at 100,418 feet, more than three times the cruising altitude of a commercial airliner and more than triple the height of Mount Everest.


The rules prohibited any parachute and required the case, rather than the phone, to strike the ground first.


RhinoShield said the payload flew with no heating equipment and no secondary housing, leaving the case exposed to temperatures between minus 40 and minus 60 degrees Celsius and to atmospheric pressure roughly 1% of that at sea level. Its research team ran sub-zero freeze and pressure testing beforehand to approximate those conditions.


A high-altitude balloon carried the phone into the stratosphere, where a remote-release mechanism triggered by an altimeter reading dropped it. The descent took about 25 minutes.


The phone was released over uninhabited terrain to eliminate risk to people on the ground, and a helicopter carrying two Sent Into Space engineers with tracking equipment reached the estimated landing zone first.


Tracking narrowed the search to about two kilometers, but the team needed more than five hours to find the phone in the wilderness, RhinoShield brand experience manager Mujou Hsiao told Guinness World Records. Sent Into Space co-founder Chris Rose said communication interference and the remoteness of the terrain complicated tracking, and that the results could only be verified once both case and phone were back in hand.


A falling object reaches terminal velocity within the first minute or so and then descends at a roughly constant speed, so the impact would have been the same from a fraction of the height.


Interesting Engineering noted that speed, orientation and landing surface all shape the outcome of any fall. The phone came down on Swedish tundra rather than concrete.


RhinoShield describes the drop as "near-space" and the protection it demonstrated as "space-grade."


The internationally recognized boundary of space is the Karman line at 100 kilometers, more than three times higher than the release point.


The AirX case, launched in 2025, is built from a single recyclable material rather than the mix of plastics and rubbers common in the category.


Its design borrows from automotive airbags and the air-cushioning systems used in athletic footwear, with air chambers meant to disperse impact energy before it reaches the phone.


Hsiao said the phone case industry generates large volumes of plastic waste because most cases combine materials that cannot be separated for recycling, and that RhinoShield has used fully recyclable mono-materials for years while facing a persistent assumption that single-material cases cannot deliver heavy-duty protection.


The stratospheric drop, she told Guinness World Records, shows that sustainable design can handle "the most extreme conditions on (and off!) Earth."


The idea came from RhinoShield co-founder and chief executive Eric Wang shortly after the AirX line launched.


Hsiao said the team first weighed more conventional stunts, including 50 consecutive 15-meter drops, before Wang pushed for the greatest height that could be arranged. Standard laboratory drop tests run at about 1.2 meters, and the company's own extreme testing involves dropping phones from its sixth-floor office, roughly 23 meters up.
