A New Era for Final Fantasy XIV
Although Final Fantasy XIV's time on the PlayStation 4 might soon be coming to an end, the critically acclaimed MMO RPG will soon show up on a new console: the Nintendo Switch 2. The prospect of grinding through raids and dungeons from the comfort of your own bed is certainly enticing. However, this port comes with a strange caveat.

Subscription Details for Nintendo Switch 2
Shortly after Square Enix CEO Takashi Kiryu announced Final Fantasy XIV would be coming to Switch 2 during the game's North American Fan Festival, he explained how subscriptions will work on the console. Unlike PC, Xbox, and PlayStation, which all use a standard Final Fantasy XIV subscription, the Nintendo Switch 2 requires players to have a distinct subscription for just that console.
Fortunately, players will not need a Switch Online subscription to play. Kiryu mentioned that Final Fantasy XIV subscribers can get a Switch Online subscription for 50% less. Additionally, those with an active PC, Xbox, or PlayStation subscription will receive a 50% discount on a Switch 2 subscription.
"After discussions with Nintendo, it was decided that the Switch 2 version of Final Fantasy XIV would require a separate subscription," Final Fantasy XIV director Naoki Yoshida added. "This was decided after many months of discussions with Nintendo, and we understand this is different from how we've done things before."
Implications of Dual Subscriptions
In summary, players planning to enjoy Final Fantasy XIV across Switch 2 and another platform will need to maintain two subscriptions. This may not pose a problem for those playing solely on Switch 2, but it is a peculiar issue that does not exist with any of the other console versions.
Anticipated Release Date
An official release date has yet to be revealed, but Final Fantasy XIV is slated to launch on Switch 2 this August. The game's next expansion, Evercold, is set to release in January 2027. This expansion will introduce two new classes and several significant changes, including an entirely new battle system.
Conclusion
The arrival of Final Fantasy XIV on the Nintendo Switch 2 marks an exciting development for fans of the franchise. While the need for a separate subscription may be inconvenient for some, the opportunity to play this beloved MMO on a portable console is a welcome addition. As we await the official release, players can look forward to the upcoming expansion, Evercold, which promises to enhance the gaming experience even further.
