Faker Appointed to the Rank of Police Sergeant

The Korean National Police Agency has appointed esports athlete Faker as an honorary police officer in a bid to raise awareness and combat the proliferation of online gambling among adolescents.

On July 22, the Korean National Police Agency announced the official appointment of world-renowned esports professional Lee "Faker" Sang-hyeok as an Honorary Police Officer and Goodwill Ambassador for the prevention of online gambling.

A representative from the police force clarified the decision behind this special designation. Faker has been bestowed the rank of "Senior Police Officer" (equivalent to Sergeant). This rank is commensurate with that of police officers officially recruited through specialized selection programs dedicated to cybercrime investigations.

The appointment was predicated on Faker's illustrious reputation as an esports competitor both domestically and internationally. Concurrently, he wields a significant positive influence over the youth demographic.

In his new capacity, "Sergeant Faker" will directly participate in the police force's public awareness campaigns. His likeness will be featured in promotional videos and posters designed to disseminate information and encourage young people to actively utilize the "Voluntary Online Gambling Reporting System for Adolescents."

According to the Korean National Police Agency, the voluntary reporting system commenced operations on May 18 and is slated to run through August 31. Initial promotional efforts have already yielded positive results. As of July 16, authorities have received a total of 806 reports from youth and the general public.

Early intervention to prevent online gambling is deemed an urgent imperative for contemporary South Korean society.

"It is crucial to detect online gambling among the youth before the problem escalates to initiate timely counseling and treatment," emphasized Yoo Jae-sung, Acting Commissioner General of the National Police Agency.

For his part, the esports star, born in 1996, expressed his deep appreciation and sense of duty toward this new social responsibility.

"I am honored to be appointed as an honorary police officer and goodwill ambassador, and I also feel a profound sense of responsibility," Faker affirmed.

The competitor pledged to proactively collaborate with law enforcement. Faker stated he will actively engage in ambassadorial activities, such as raising widespread awareness among young people regarding the perils of online gambling and promoting the voluntary reporting system.
